5 Unmistakable Signs Your Boss Is Trying to Make You Quit - And How to Respond
5 Unmistakable Signs Your Boss Is Trying to Make You Quit - And How to Respond Passive aggression isnât a good look on anyone â" especially not your boss. If your boss has been acting weird lately and it feels like something is up, he or she might be subtly, quietly trying to push you to quit. Although this type of conduct is less than becoming, it happens quite often. Firing someone is awkward and difficult, and sometimes your boss might not have the gut or the necessary cause to do it. In such situation, some bosses might decide that making your life at the company more miserable will make you quit on your own accord, saving them the uncomfortable duty of firing you. If you think that is the case with you and youâre being pushed to quit â" dont sit idly. Look for signs and make some moves. 1. You No Longer Feel Like a Part of the Conversation Communication is the entire basis for accomplishing anything. If no one knows what anyone else is doing, weâd all be bumbling around in the dark without two sticks to rub together. Effective and frequent communication makes a workplace function at its highest capacity. If you have suddenly stopped getting memos and notifications about a big project, or your attendance at the business meetings is no longer required, this should be cause for concern. It might mean that people are working around you, rather than with you. 2. Something Isnât Right When You Log In Everything is digital. You probably need several different credentials and passwords to log into things at work. If you canât log in or your permissions seem messed up, it might be a cybersecurity issue. Rule that one out first. If it isnât, this means someone has revoked your access or changed your permissions. If this change seems to isolate you and it affects your ability to do your job, it could be an obvious hint that your contributions arenât needed to important projects. 3. The Team is Moving On Without You Think back to that âTeamwork Makes the Dream Work!â poster in the breakroom. Even if all those team building activities felt a little cheesy at the time, they were important. They helped to foster a connected work environment where everyone understood their teammatesâ strengths. If it seems as though these bonding activities are taking place without you, or that other members of your team seem to be placed in elevated roles, this kind of exclusion is a bad sign. If your boss intended for you to be a part of the next group project, he or she wouldnât have let you sit out during team time. 4. You Feel Like Youâre Under a Magnifying Glass Some bosses are natural micromanagers â" and it annoys most people who are competent in their roles. If your boss doesnât have a history of micromanaging you but suddenly seems to be taking a different tact, scrutinizing every action you take, this could be an all-out attempt to annoy you. Your boss might be attempting to aggravate you so much that you decide to leave. Alternatively, he or she may be laying in wait for you to make a mistake that can be used against you as a cause for termination of employment. 5. Youâre Suddenly Training Someone Else Itâs a lot like making someone dig their own grave. A new hire comes in and is assigned to you. You start teaching this person the ins and outs of your position. They get a decent handle on things, and youâre out the door. Youâve trained your replacement, and that was the last thing the company needed you for. This situation isnât uncommon or wrong in scenarios where the employee knows theyâre getting a transfer or a promotion â" oftentimes, bosses will outright ask them to train the person who will be filling their previous role. If thatâs not in the cards for you, the situation is different. If youâre being assigned new faces out of nowhere and these people are outright shadowing you, you should be alarmed. You shouldnât make it easy for your company to replace you in such an underhanded way. How to Respond If youâre still a little unclear about whatâs going on, talk to your boss. If the signs are ambiguous or there are alternative explanations that make rational sense, a conversation might be able to clear things up. If you hit a lot of markers on the list, optimize your resume, start looking for a new position, and go to interviews. Quit once you have something new lined up. You deserve to be treated better. Spark Creative Entrepreneur Retreat, or, How I Lit That Fire To Make A Dream Come True
Spark Creative Entrepreneur Retreat, or, How I Lit That Fire To Make A Dream Come True Sparks Fly by Seize the Night Tania Wojciechowski is a former client of mine who has done The Amazeballs: teamed up with another former client of mine (hi Deanna!) to create a brand-new creative retreat called Spark! Of course I wanted to help spread the word far and wide, so I asked Tonia if shed like to talk about how the heck they made that Big Dream happen (doesnt it seem soooooooooo big and scary and head-explosion-y?!). Such goodness below enjoy! You know those moments where you are completely sure about something? They are pretty rare, so when I do get hit with one of those moments, I try to listen and act on them, cuz seriously, sometimes they can change your life. I had one last fall that Iâd like to tell you about. Last fall, I was reading Kelly Rae Robertâs e-book, Flying Lessons. In one section she writes about wanting to connect with other creative entrepreneurs. In order to make this happen, she set up a creative retreat and invited all sorts of women. The people at that first retreat soon became her mentors, her support system, and her lifelong friends. As soon as I read this, I had tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my arms. I could totally picture being at a retreat like this, surrounded by women chatting, sharing, and laughing new friends, entrepreneurs with whom I could learn from and share ideas with. The image made me feel so completely content that I knew I had to make it happen both for myself and for others who might be craving this same connection with others. My first thought was âthis is going to be amazing!â But then my second thought was âohmygodholycrap, how can little olâ me make this happen?â I knew I needed help making this dream a reality. I instantly thought of Deanna Mullican of Apples and Orange who I had met through one of Michelleâs Operations group coaching sessions. I had immediately felt a connection to her and knew sheâd be perfect to work with. I wrote to her immediately and invited her to help me make this a reality. I talked about wanting the retreat to feel welcoming and safe to everyone who came, a place to share knowledge with everyone there open and supportive and cooperative. And I threw out the idea of it taking place in the U.S. Southwest. Iâve never been, but have always been drawn to the area as it has such a positive, creative vibe. She wrote back with a huge âYES!â Soon after, we met on Skype, and started moving forward quickly talking about the goals of the retreat, the feelings we wanted to encourage, the things weâd like to talk about, the people weâd like to invite. We researched locations and costs and then when we booked the amazing Hacienda Dona Andrea just outside Santa Fe, it became very real. Every step of the way, we had moments of âare we sure? is this going to work?â and weâd have a chat and say âof course it is!â and weâd take the next baby step forward. Thats the Spark locale! Couldyajustdie? Image from Spark website When we invited our retreat leaders, we penned two emails one to the lovely Michelle, and one to the fabulous Jessika Hepburn of Oh My! Handmade. I wanted the emails to these amazing ladies to be reflective of the retreat warm, supportive, and respectful and happily, they both said they would love to be our main speakers! Unfortunately, Michelle had to pull out as she is getting healthy (you do know weâre all talking about her bodacious boobs, right?). So an email went to Alexandra Franzen who also said yes, and we couldnât be more thrilled. So there you have it, a rare moment of knowing, and a dream of being surrounded by love and support has turned into a real-life creative retreat that will take place in just over 3 months. Every step of the way has been both scary and easy. Scary because we are putting in a lot of time and money into something so big. Easy because every part of working with Deanna has been example after example of synchronicity and fluidity. My personal big word for 2012 is âconfidenceâ to me, this means feeling those scary feelings about something and doing it anyway, and listening to those inner moments of clarity and contentment. Confidence is knowing that after hitting âsendâ on those emails comes the happy dance of joy when that person says yes. And it also means that if they say no, knowing that someone else will say yes. I encourage you to step into your own confidence and make your own dreams come true, however big or little they are. All it takes is baby steps towards something truly amazing! And guess what? Each one of those baby steps are amazing, too! Weâre also trying to raise money to bring one lucky lady to New Mexico for free! 5 Ways To Be Smarter With Your Job Search - Work It Daily
5 Ways To Be Smarter With Your Job Search - Work It Daily 5 Ways To Be Smarter With Your Job Search Job seekers, there is no doubt you are facing a very challenging time. Whether you have 20 years of experience or only a year, the pressure is on. But realize it is not impossible to find opportunities, despite our current economic standing. Related: Should Job Seekers Take A Vacation? You have to go the extra mile to show employers you are the right fit. A few years ago, employers could handle the risk of hiring the wrong fit, but today it is very different. The cost to let an employee go and hire another is very high. Employers want to pick the right fit the first time around. 5 Ways To Be Smarter With Your Job Search Here are my job search tips to help you stand out: 1. Determine Your Brand And Value Proposition What will you bring to the employer? What makes you better than the rest? This needs to be communicated in your resume, cover letter, interview, and even as you network. Have your elevator speech down. If you met the CEO of your dream company and had 30 seconds to talk about yourself, what would you say? 2. Utilize Free Career-Related Workshops Offered In Your City Services that can cost hundreds of dollars are available at no cost (or very small fees) from organizations looking to help out job seekers in transition. Do your research! You might be able to get assistance with resume development, interview preparation, networking effectively, and much more for free. If you are in Portland or Washington, stay tuned to my site for information regarding events coming up in the area. 3. Research Every Organization Before You Submit Your Resume You need to know about these companies well before an interview. It shows your professionalism and more importantly your interest in the company. Employers want employees who will love their company, not just the job. This will help you stand out by showing you are genuinely interested in the organization and you will be ready to hit the ground running day one. Don't just check out the companyâs website. Read articles on the company and create Google News alerts for companies you wish to work for. Your goal is to impress the employer with your knowledge of their company. 4. Join LinkedIn Job seekers are having amazing luck on LinkedIn. Recruiters, headhunters, hiring managers and others with hiring decision power are recruiting via this site. Make sure you are taking advantage of every aspect of LinkedIn. Many resumes and business cards will have a link to a LinkedIn profile. This is a requirement. Create your profile today. You can also use LinkedIn to find out more about a company and their employees. I know some job seekers use the site to become more familiar with the person they will be interviewing with. You can also use it as a powerful networking tool and meet people who have similar interests as your own. 5. Create Flawless Documents Resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, websites, social networking sites, portfolios and any other tool you are using to market yourself must be perfect. I know this seems like an obvious one, but typos and grammar issues are pet peeves of employers today. If you can, get the advice of someone in the industry you are looking to go into. Again, all marketing tools need to be 100% error free and be relevant to the industry you are applying for. 5 Ways to Help Your Partner During Their Job Search
5 Ways to Help Your Partner During Their Job Search Should your spouses (or partners) opinion influence your job search? One job hunter who senfgas his job and went through what he calls various stages of mourning, says yes. In a post, Jason of the JibberJobber career blog shares the story of how he and his wife made it through okay.I write this from my heart, bedrngnis to offend anyone, he says. Ive been thinking about this topic a lot since we went to a new friends house for dinner last week. On the way to their house, my wife asked So how much can I tell herbei? If she asks how much money we make now, what can I say? My wife asked because she has a tendency to share well, everything. I tend to be significantly more private. My response to her was, Honey, you can say whatever you want. Tonight, I trust you.Jason goes on to explain how the dinner was something he now wishes he and his wife could do more often. After dinner, my wife was alone with my buddys wife and, when I went up to make the lets go home signs, I noticed there had been tears lots of tears, he writes. It was a good reminder of how raw and in-the-moment this I s-lost my job, and I am worthless the feelings are.Jason went on to write a list of 13 suggestions for how couples whove lost their jobs can cope, together. Ultimately, he suggests that your spouse should play a role in your job search. Here are some of the key points he makes for how they can play a supportive role.1. Providing support.Studies show that couples who support one another succeed more in both their relationships and in their careers. In fact, research published in the Harvard geschftlicher umgang Review suggests that mutually supportive relationships let us take career risks, help us be more resilient to setbacks, and even lean in at work. While these relationships can be difficult to find, the fact that support is beneficial is nothing new. What I really needed was support, Jason writes in his blog post. Most of how I defi ned myself professionally, which helped me define who I was as a menschengerecht being (I hear this is a male characteristic), disappeared overnight. I went from Jason-the-somebody to Jason-the-loser. I really needed support, even though I turned into a loser overnight.2. Providing a network.I remember a guy who learned about the power of networking in a job search he said his wife had a really hard time since he was out networking (lots of breakfasts and lunches), and not at home on the job boards... submitting resumes, Jason writes. Please, please know that the best use of time is not sitting at the computer all day When your spouse goes out to network, be proud and encouraging (and know that he/she is probably doing something out of his/her comfort zone). In fact, you can both help each other network, too. When I lost my job, my world shrunk to my neighborhood, since I didnt commute or travel anymore. Unfortunately, I didnt really know any neighbors. My wife did, however, and she started talking to her friends about my job search, and what I was looking for. In fact, I leaned on her too much for networking, thinking she could spend her time networking while I spent time on the job board. Your spouse cant do all the networking for you, but he/she certainly can tell their friends, who might help you network into your next role. This felt like one of the most helpful things that my wife did during that time.3. Providing intimacy. From my perspective, the job search is filled with enough rejection let me encourage you to continue to be intimate even during the very difficult, emotional job search, Jason writes. You can make it through this, and continuing the sweet somethings of a relationship can be quite reassuring.Of course, intimacy goes beyond physical means of appreciation. Being intimate also means allowing yourself to cry, being honest with each other and keeping communication open.Look, I know you both want to be positive and strong for one another, but you can also be honest and sincere Dont let months and months go without communicating your wants, needs, desires, dreams and feelings for one another, he says. My wife and I didnt communicate for months because we were trying to be strong for one another. We were really only going to share positive things with one another (we didnt plan that, its just how it happened). Unfortunately, there wasnt a whole lot of positive that we saw during that time and very few words were exchanged. When we did talk, it seemed like a fake hope. I wish we could have gone back to that raw time and communicated more, with a lot of sincerity and honesty.4. Providing encouragement to ask for help. Its okay to ask friends and family for help, Jason adds, also noting that professional help is key. There is nothing wrong with getting professional help, whether its counseling or medicine at least youll have someone qualified to help you know if you are at the point where you do need the help. It can be diffic ult to ask for help, so encouraging your partner to seek someone to talk to can be the push they need for a happier, healthier and more productive job search.5. Providing organization and optimism.Studies show that keeping clear of clutter can lead to more career success. Plus, if you keep your home life organized (like your house clean), youre not taking so much time away from your job search to take on built-up chores. In other words, just because youve lost your job, dont let things go elsewhere. And your partner can help you in that.Likewise, they may help you in making a few extra bucks here and there while you look for a job.The day I got let go is the day my wife got her first piano student within three weeks, she had 20 students, Jason writes. She undercharged, in my opinion, but the few hundred dollars she brought in each month was so, so helpful. A few hundred dollars when you dont need it is play money. A few hundred dollars when you are unemployed might titelseite all o f the utility bills. What a relief it was to know that our utilities were covered. In fact, being able to focus on your job hunt without the stress of home life or bills will even help you stay positive or, as Jason suggests, less negative. Thats one of the biggest things with which spouses can help one another.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo travel.
